11 The Vine

In the vine, Herbert Meusburger has found a formal element that fits seamlessly, in terms of content, into his sculptural canon shaped by “separating and connecting”. For his work, he cast a 60-year-old vine from Perchtoldsdorf in bronze. To this end, together with 3D Wood from Laion/St. Ulrich in Val Gardena, a company specialising in 3D printing, he developed a special prototyping process to produce a casting mould.

This mould, in turn, provided the starting point for the Krismer Guss bronze foundry in Telfs to realise an exact replica of the vine in bronze. As regards the precision and perfection with which the vine has been translated into the new material, this methodology takes bronze casting to a new level of quality. Every tiniest fibre, every fold of the wood is reproduced with the utmost accuracy. It is a material transformation of the highest point precision. This new process technology makes bronze casts of up to four metres in height possible, with each cast being unique, as the silicone-like mould templates melt away with every casting.

This sculpture also serves as a symbolic memorial to nature. After all, many vineyards are also threatened in their very existence by the over-intensification of cultivation.
