05 The Wall

In 1997, the cross-border “Rhein-Art” exhibition took place between Lustenau in Vorarlberg and Widnau in Switzerland. Herbert Meusburger also contributed a remarkable work. He split a massive granite block into twelve rectangular slabs and arranged them in a row perpendicular to the Rhine riverbank. They were supported by steel tubes that helped the slabs stand in an almost upright position.

A portion of this sculptural work now stands in the garden of Restaurant Guth. The steel tubes perforate the slabs and cast changing shadows on the granite depending on the sunlight. They penetrate, so to speak, the seemingly separating stone wall and allow one to sense what lies beyond. The supporting function of the steel is concealed behind the slabs, making them appear almost as freestanding elements.

What lies beyond gains tension and can only be vaguely sensed.
